Chemistry Formulas

A chemical formula has an important role to play in understanding different concepts in chemistry, mainly because it describes the composition of a compound or an element. A formula can sometimes be quite simple, as He (helium), or it can take a rather complicated form, such as C27H46O (cholesterol).

Writing Chemical Formulas

By learning the basic rules and the names of the elements, it's possible to write chemical formulas. We simply need to know the name of the compound to write down a chemical formula.

The rules for writing chemical formulas are

1. Write the symbol of each element in the compound.

2. If there is more than one atom of a particular element in the formula unit, write the number of atoms immediately after the symbol for the element.
